Our Return to the USA

Dear Scarlett,
On March 28, we returned to your home country, the USA.  Leaving Margarita was so sad:  the ocean was so perfectly blue and the sand so white.  All of our favorite people were sad to see us go, but I think we were ready for the next phase of our lives.  Our time together in Venezuela was something that I will cherish forever, and we are forever bonded as a family because of it.

When we stepped across the border I can't tell you how happy I was to be within the saftey of a stable country.  Venezuela had become tumultuous and we struggled with so many basic things:  water, electricity, finding food, diapers, and then the fear of the violence.  Stepping into the USA felt so peaceful.  Everyone was so helpful and I knew that here, there would be so many opportunities for you, my little girl.

We started off in Rhode Island where we stayed with you Aunt Sarah, Uncle Anthony, Bonnie, Clara, and Mimi and Doodle.  We had a wonderful time taking wagon rides, going to parks, libraries, museums, and so much more.  As a parent, it was just incredible to see how many options there are here for you.  We had so much fun there and you loved being with your cousins.

After ten wonderful days, we flew to San Diego to stay with Mimi and Doodle for three weeks.  What a heaven it was with the chickens, and Friday, the tortoise.  These three weeks were full of reunions.  You met so many of my friend's kids, who I hope you will be friends with forever: Andre, Laney, Lucy, Carson, Landon, Harper, Audrey and more.  We went to Legoland, farms, parks, libraries, and so much more.  You truly loved being there.

You have started to talk so much lately.  Watching you learn to acquire language has been like witnessing a miracle.  Each time I hear you utter a new word I am in true awe.  How does it happen?  How do you learn it?  Your voice is truly beautiful and I love hearing you start to give names to the objects in your world.

You continue to be a fantastic reader.  We spend so much time each day reading.  We read so many books in both English and Spanish.  I am always so impressed by your focus and your desire to learn.  You also like to hide.  You hide in closets and bathrooms in the dark with the doors shut.  It's hilarious. I am also still breastfeeding you.  I really don't plan to stop until you want to stop.  We both have a blast.  You love to laugh while breastfeeding and it is an amazing bond between us.

Thank you so much for being in my life, Scarlett.  You have changed the way I see everything.  You have made the world more beautiful.
I love you,
Mom
